The Olympic Games are over and by the time you read this there will have been much comment, both positive and negative, about the “legacy”.

It has been amazing – the goodwill that has been generated. Did you hear the 16 year old American gymnast who took gold in both the individual & team categories claiming, “I give all the glory to God. It’s kind of a win-win situation, the glory goes up to God and the blessings fall down on me.” So said Gabby Douglas.

“Never give up on your dreams, God is Good,” said Sanya Richards-Ross, after triumphing in the 400m women’s race.

The churches in the area opened their doors to international visitors, provided help and pastoral care and support to the public from all over the world, and more than 2,000 volunteers, representing over 40 countries, came to Britain to help the churches to run children’s clubs, big screen community festivals and sports clinics, whatever that is. But no, force feeding people into Christianity was not on the agenda, although there were some churches handing out pamphlets & leaflets with various religious slogans like “Jesus loves you”. At the same time, there were litter bins full of that sort of religious literature that had been given to people who did not want it. Christians can be so pushy and put their feet where their mouths are!

The Madagascan athletes and their families landed at Luton airport with no luggage and only the clothes they stood up in. The churches came to the rescue with 20 bags of clothing.

It is the listening ear and watchful eye of Christians during those two weeks; people thinking outside the walls of the church.

There is a new, inspired interest in sport. There is also a legacy in the way faith communities have worked together on the Games. The hopes, dreams and the aspirations of young people have been nurtured at the end of it all; now that’s worth its weight in gold.
